A luxury remodel is mostly decisions, made in the right order.

On the Peninsula, the best remodels feel inevitable: rooms that open to the view, materials that age well in sea air, and details nobody notices because they simply work. This guide covers what finish levels cost, how to approach interiors, floors and paint, and where the budget does the most good.

Finish level

What "luxury" does to the number.

Finish level is the single biggest lever in a remodel after size. In Palos Verdes Estates, a whole-home remodel runs from about $266 per square foot at a standard finish to more than $1,100 at a luxury finish at the top of the range. Most Peninsula homes are built to the premium band; luxury adds custom millwork, stone slabs, specialist trades and longer lead times.

The point of the chart is not the extremes. It is that the gap between bands is decided by dozens of small choices, and every one of them can be made on purpose.

Chart: estimated whole-home remodel cost per square foot in Palos Verdes Estates. Standard $266–$700, premium $312–$824, luxury $422–$1,112 per square foot.

Interiors, floors and paint

Quiet materials, chosen for light and salt air.

Peninsula light is strong and it changes all day, so interiors that work here tend to be calm: plaster or matte paint in warm whites, natural stone, and wood with an even grain. Wide-plank white oak is the most common floor choice for a reason: it suits the light, it can be refinished, and engineered versions stay flat near large glass openings where temperature swings.

Paint is a finish, not an afterthought. Ask for samples on every wall that gets afternoon sun, and use exterior-grade products and corrosion-resistant hardware anywhere the sea air reaches.

Where to spend

Spend where you touch it and where you see the view.

A remodel budget is never unlimited, so put it where it changes daily life.

  1. Worth it

Large glass openings to the view, a kitchen that works for how you cook, good windows and doors, and the structure and drainage you will never see.

  2. Can wait

Decorative lighting, some built-ins and specialty finishes can be added later without opening walls. Structure, glass and services cannot.

Common questions

Luxury remodel questions

How long does a luxury remodel take?

Longer than a standard one, mostly because of lead times on custom work and stone. For a full home, plan on design and city review before construction even starts; our timeline planner shows the phases for your city.

Can we live in the house during the work?

For a kitchen or a wing, sometimes. For a whole-home remodel, moving out is usually faster, safer and cheaper overall.

How firm are these figures?

Figures are planning ranges from our cost estimator (2024 Southern California base rates, adjusted for each city and finish level). They are not a bid; a site visit and drawings set the real number.
