The kitchen is the room that opens the house to the view.

In most Peninsula homes the kitchen sits at the centre of everything: the family room, the terrace, the outdoor kitchen. A good remodel treats it that way. Here is what kitchens look like now, and what one costs to build here.

What it costs

A 250 sq ft kitchen, city by city.

For a premium-finish kitchen of about 250 square feet on a flat lot, our estimator puts Palos Verdes Estates at $99k–$241k, Rolling Hills at $97k–$235k and Rancho Palos Verdes at $94k–$230k. The same kitchen in Malibu, Newport Beach or Laguna Beach runs a few percent higher. That is the Peninsula's value in one line: the same coast, for less.

Where you land in the range is about appliances, stone, cabinetry and whether walls or plumbing move.

What's current

Calmer, more integrated, built for how people actually cook.

The kitchens people are asking for now are less about statement pieces and more about flow. Appliances disappear behind panels; a working pantry or scullery keeps the main island clear; induction cooktops replace gas in many remodels; and large-format stone or porcelain slabs mean fewer seams to clean.

On the Peninsula, the kitchen also runs outside. A wide opening to the terrace, an outdoor kitchen sheltered from the afternoon wind, and finishes that tolerate sand and salt make the room twice the size for most of the year.

Common questions

Kitchen remodel questions

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

Construction itself is often a few weeks to a few months; design, ordering and city review usually take longer than the build. Order long-lead items such as appliances and stone before demolition.

Does a kitchen remodel need a permit?

Almost always, once electrical, plumbing, gas or walls change. Your city and, in some neighbourhoods, your association will want to see the plans.

How firm are these figures?

Figures are planning ranges from our cost estimator (2024 Southern California base rates, adjusted for each city and finish level). They are not a bid; a site visit and drawings set the real number.
